Excessive Bleeding or Bruising
Dr. Weyrich's Naturopathic Functional Medicine Notebook
Overview
While hemophilia is a well-known genetic disease that results in excessive bleeding due to
dysfunction of the mechanisms of hemostasis, many individuals without known genetic traits
also suffer from frequent nosebleeds, bleeding gums, brusing, and other forms of excessive
bleeding. In some cases, this can be the result of an underlying
hypothyroid condition [Starr2005, pg 151].
Differential Diagnosis
- Hypothyroid
- Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP) - An autoimmune disease that destroys platelets.
