Hypercoagulability and Excessive Clot Formation
Dr. Weyrich's Naturopathic Functional Medicine Notebook
Overview
Excessive clot formation or hypercoagulability is due to a
dysfunction of the mechanisms of hemostasis, and can lead to problems such as deep vein
thrombosis and stroke.
Etiology
Hypercoagulability and excessive clot formation can have many causes, including:
- Venous stasis, particularly among bed-ridden patients and airline travelers [Starr2005, pg 151].
- Hypothyroidism, which decreases venous flow and muscle tone [Starr2005, pg 151].
- Oral birth control agents (which may disrupt thyroid binding globulin in the blood) [Starr2005, pg 151].
- Inflamatory injury to the endothial lining of arteries [Ross1999; Starr2005, pg 151].
