Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Dr. Weyrich's Naturopathic Functional Medicine Notebook
Overview
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a painful condition of the wrist associated with pinching
of the median nerve as it traverses the wrist.
Differential Diagnosis
A number of other condtitions besides pinching of the median nerve can give rise to symptoms
similar to CTS. As these alternative causes are easier to fix without invasive surgery,
these possible causes should be ruled out first:
- Basal body temperature below 97.8 degrees F, elevated TSH, or depressed T3
(suggests hypothyroidism) [DeGroot1996; Starr2005, pg 125].
- Structural evaluation by a Naturopathic Medical Doctor, Chiropracter, or DO
to rule out subluxation resulting in the pinching of a nerve in the shoulder, neck or back.
