Gut-Mediated Neuromuscular Dysfunction

Dr. Weyrich's Naturopathic Functional Medicine Notebook

Overview

There is a growing body of evidence that disorders as varied as autism, attention deficit/hyperactivity, epilepsy, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, irritable bowel, inflammatory bowel, and other chronic and degenerative diseases share common features of gut dysbiosis, leaky gut, food sensitivities, nutritional deficiencies, and environmental toxicity. As such, these disorders all respond to variations on the same functional medicine diagnostic work-up and naturopathic treatment protocols.

This article summarizes a common framework for approaching all of these types of disorders, for which Dr. Weyrich has coined the term "Gut-Mediated Neuromuscular Dysfunction."

Of course each patient has a unique presentation that requires individualizing the application of this framework, and each diagnosis code may have additional aspects to consider. Nevertheless, the naturopathic functional medical approach approaches treatment from a holistic perspective and treats the individual not the diagnosis.
